Figure 2. The left
ventricular assist device is a blood pump connected to the left
ventricular apex via a 1-inch diameter cannula that effectively
drains all returning blood from the left ventricle. When the
pump is 90% full, it ejects into an outflow conduit anastomosed
to the ascending aorta, porcine valves prevent any backflow.
