Others / Comments Laboratory Introduction:A progressive chain of pathophysiological events links cardiovascular risk factors to clinical manifestations of disease and life-threatening cardiovascular events. This chain--the cardiovascular continuum--underlies cardiovascular disease and holds the key to its prevention and treatment. Pre-emptive medicine is a novel medical concept that aims to precisely assess tailored cardiovascular risk and disease management in individual patients. Recent advances in genomic analysis, information technology, and artificial intelligence should make this medical concept feasible. The research policy of our department is to conduct translational research, ranging from basic science to clinical research with high originality to deliver precision or preemptive medicine.

Others / Comments Despite recent advances in medical treatments, the cardiovascular diseases remain the number killer of human being. In view of aging society, there is an urgent need to overcome refractory cardiovascular diseases. Our department focuses on exploring the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, heart failure (HF) and pulmonary hypertension (PH) using physiological, pharmacological, genetical and molecular biological approach. Novel findings on pathological mechanisms would lead us to develop novel therapeutics for cardiovascular diseases. In addition, in order to establish evidence for cardiovascular disease, we conducted several clinical research regarding national database.

Others / Comments Nikko City, located in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, is distinguished by its rich natural environment – designated as a national park – and by its numerous historically and culturally significant temples and shrines, including Nikko Toshogu Shrine, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This prominent destination attracts approximately 10 million visitors annually from both domestic and international origins.

Situated in this culturally and environmentally significant region, Dokkyo Medical University Nikko Medical Center functions as a central institution for advanced healthcare delivery. It plays a pivotal role in maintaining the health and safety of both the local population and the considerable number of visiting tourists.

In parallel with its clinical mission, the medical center is actively engaged in both molecular, physiological and clinical research, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular medicine. Our basic research program is centered on elucidating the molecular mechanisms regulating autophagy in cardiomyocytes, with the ultimate goal of advancing our understanding of cellular homeostasis and identifying novel therapeutic targets for the prevention of heart failure.

A second major research initiative is focused on the scientific basis of cardiovascular rehabilitation – a therapeutic modality with considerable clinical potential for patients with cardiovascular and end-stage renal diseases. Despite its growing clinical application, the mechanistic underpinnings of rehabilitation remain poorly defined. We are therefore pursuing investigations aimed at elucidating its biological mechanisms and optimizing its efficacy.

Furthermore, we conduct epidemiological and pathophysiological research into rare and refractory cardiovascular disorders, including large vessel vasculitis, cardiac amyloidosis, cardiac sarcoidosis, idiopathic cardiomyopathies, and cardiovascular toxicities associated with cancer therapies.

We extend a warm invitation to early-career researchers worldwide who are motivated to contribute to high-impact cardiovascular science within a research environment that is both intellectually stimulating and situated in one of the most historically and naturally distinguished regions in Japan.
